Breaking news:
Fire on southeast flank of Greenhorn Mountain
Aug. 30, 2006

HUERFANO COUNTY, COLO. -- A small fire was burning today on National Forest land on the southeast flanks of Greenhorn Mountain, just a few miles to the south of the Pueblo/Huerfano county line. Situated about seven miles west of Interstate 25 and Lascar Road, the fire is believed to be caused by lightning - possibly a storm that passed through two nights earlier.

Crews from Rye Fire Department, Huerfano County Fire Department, BLM, Colorado Division of Forestry, and Juniper Valley responded. Two single engine air tankers made drops and a heavy tanker made multiple slurry drops to contain the fire, estimated at five to seven acres in size.

The fire, officially named Tom's Branch, is more than a mile up steep, rocky terrain. Hand crews and air support are the primary methods of attack. The fire was extinguished on Sept. 1.
