Correlating First Amendment views with election results: A comparison of letters to the editor with the 2004 presidential election in Colorado.
Rich Stromberg B.A. candidate, Journalism and Public Communications University of Alaska Anchorage December 2005
Abstract A review of existing research did not reveal any previous study in which opinions regarding the First Amendment as expressed in letters to the editor are compared with actual voting results for a presidential election. During the fall of 2005, 750 letters from 16 counties in Colorado were analyzed for comments either in support of or opposed to separation of church and state and the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and redress of grievances. Data was then compared with how each county voted in the 2004 presidential election. Gender of letter author was collected and played a major role in the results which indicate a correlation between Democrat voters and seditious letters. To download the complete report, click here. |
